Autumn AmAm Winners: Sue Hill, Patricia Dixon, Jane Wheeler, Sharon Yenson of Dunston Hall with Maureen McRae (centre), AmAm organiser and Match Vice Captain.
AUTUMN AMAM AT DUNSTON HALL ON 17th SEPTEMBER 2014

Maureen reported that our 2014 AmAm was held at Dunston Hall on Wednesday 17th September. It was a cool, misty day which brightened up around lunchtime – a day to benefit the later teams.

120 ladies from 20 clubs took part. The two tee start limited the number of teams which means unfortunately that there was a small waiting list. The format was teams of four, two stableford scores to count on each hole with all four counting on the par 3s. Two nearest the pins and two longest drives catered for the handicap bands 0-20 and 21-36.

Dunston Hall was a very welcoming and hospitable venue. The Vets rep Lynda Love and Match Captain Sue Hill had everything in hand and even the Vets flag was flying – well it tried but, as can be seen from the photo below, there wasn’t a lot of wind that day!
Team Captain and member of Dunston Hall, Sue Hill, took this photo of the NVLGS flag at the AmAm. In case you don’t recognise it, Sue will be wearing it at the AGM!!
Mr Richard Tidy, Golf Manager, and Robbie the Chef and his team were particularly helpful. The check-in/scoring desk was manned from before 8.00 a.m. until after 5.00 p.m. by three members of Royal Cromer – Beryl Riches, Gill Ley and Ursula Hazard. At around 4.30 p.m. Jane Wheeler, Lady Vice Captain welcomed us to Dunston Hall, the Lady Captain unfortunately being unable to attend. Our President, Barbara Warren presented the prizes to the winning players.

104 ladies had perfect conditions for playing golf with afternoon sunshine and a gentle breeze. Once again this event was oversubscribed and apologies to those who did not get in as sadly we could only accommodate 26 teams with a two tee start. Everyone seemed to have a good day out and there was a very pleasant atmosphere in the clubhouse. Prizes were presented up to 5th place, plus some nearest the pins, and this year's first place and winners of the Judith Mackinnon Salver were Jane Wheeler, Sue Hill, Diana Piccolo and Alison Mackway from Dunston Hall. The Society is very grateful to everyone who generously bought raffle tickets which raised £380 for the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital Charity. Big thanks to Thetford Golf Club for their beautifully presented course and delicious lunch and to their ladies section for all their help in making this a huge success.

Match Captain Sue Saunders reported that it was her first scratch match of the season and it had been a struggle to get the 12 players required for the away match in Lincolnshire. Six games of four ball better ball were played in good spirits in fine golfing weather on a pleasant golf course that wasn't too long. The scoring in general was very good and every match was toughly fought. It was the first outing for the Vets for Bev Fowler of Mundesley, Jane Herrington of Thetford and Kay Bailey from Eaton and they all proved to be a valuable asset to the team. A big thank you to the Sleaford Club for their hospitality and well done to the Norfolk team. As so many competitions are now for the handicap golfer, it was lovely to play without shots and the result was a friendly 3-3 draw.

This was a brand-new fixture played off handicap with the thought that it would be great to allow more members to play in our matches against other counties. Match Captain Sue Saunders reported that it was her first in charge, and she had selected from a number of clubs. It was agreed that it would be played as a 4 ball better ball with 12 players in each team. The teams met in bright sunshine and the match was played in dry conditions although it did end up being extremely chilly at the end of the day. Obviously, most players were new to the team and several members were unsure of what to wear with much hilarity regarding team colours and several different shades of cerise/pink were on show. Lincolnshire sent their team selection ahead of time so that partnerships could be chosen with similar handicaps and the match was played in good spirits. The teams enjoyed a two-course meal of oven-roasted chicken breast, dauphinoise potato, broccoli with a mushroom cream sauce followed by lemon meringue pie. A big thanks to Heacham Manor and their Secretary Karen for her help in organising the event. The course was in excellent condition and the meal was extremely tasty. The result was a very friendly 3-3 draw.

Competitions Secretary, Jill Bullimore, reported that it was unfortunate there was a small field but those taking part enjoyed the day and finally the sun shone. This competition is split into two divisions: one for those with handicaps lower than 21 who play a medal and a second division for those 21+ up to 36 who play a stableford. There were eight players in Division 1. Trophies are awarded for the best Scratch player and runner up, a handicap winner and a best nett score for an over 65 player. In Division 2, nineteen players took part. President, Sue Hill, presented the trophies and prizes. Congratulations to all those who took part and especially our winners. The raffle which was well supported raised £105.

The Spring Four Ball Betterball Stableford was held at Sprowston Manor Golf Club on ...th April 2024. Competitions Secretary Jill reported that 108 ladies from 19 clubs took part. We were only allocated one tee and so there were around three and a half hours from the first to the last teeing off. Unfortunately, the weather was very variable with some ladies experiencing everything from hail to rain showers to a little sunshine. Obviously with this large field, play did slow at times, the weather being the biggest factor with ladies having to put on and take off rain gear. A few comments were made about this but had it been a little warmer and drier this would not have been a factor. The winners were in the first group out and to give them their due they stayed to the end to be presented with their trophies. Due to the length of time from first to last, a lot of ladies left and so there were few at the presentation at the end. Maybe if this scenario is repeated we forgo the presentation and make other arrangements. Clubs will and do prefer a one tee start. Sprowston Manor's hospitality could not have been better. They really went above and beyond and nothing was too much trouble. In particular, the Sprowston member who acted as starter was willing to check on nearest the pins and confirm with all the players the change we had to make. The nearest the pin on the 6th was late getting in position and this was not noticed until several groups had gone past so another hole was chosen so that all could attempt it. Sprowston Manor gave a Four Ball for the raffle as well as leisure day passes and cuddly toys to augment our raffle which was appreciated and a lot of raffle tickets were sold. The Ladies' Captain, Hazel, gave her time to sell raffle tickets and that was so helpful. It had been arranged that baked potatoes with various fillings would be the meal afterwards . This perhaps could have had a salad to go with it. We did also have coffee or tea on arrival. All in all this was a very successful event and I am told was the biggest field we have had, may be because it was central and was a reasonable cost.
