Match vs Norfolk Men's Past Captains held at Swaffham Golf Club on September 2014

NVLGS • September 19, 2014
Well, the last match of the season finally arrived, Norfolk Men’s Past Captains. The team increased by two pairs met at Swaffham with only a slight anxiety that Iet Cuppens would arrive on time after her early visit to the hairdressers! All was well; with an impressive coiffure, Iet made it. It turned out to be a splendidly sunny day…..how fortunate we have been with the weather for our matches.

We play a different format for this match – 3/4 difference and Myhill scoring – and that caused some initial confusion over shot allowances, especially as we were lucky in ‘persuading’ the men to play off the whites! Once underway, we had some very close matches but a special mention should be made of Eppie Zandvoort and Pat Bland who were on fire! Sadly we lost the match but certainly gave them a fright!

We were warmly welcomed by Swaffham and enjoyed an excellent meal.

Colours were awarded to Sadie Lines and Eppie Zandvoort.

My thanks to all the team for their good humour and good golf!

Angie Allsopp reported that 88 ladies from 14 clubs played in this event. It was a very good day, the weather was extremely kind and we were looked after very well by all the staff at Bawburgh. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day and quite a few stayed for the presentation. Unfortunately, we did not have a starter so everyone saw themselves off, which was not a problem.

Match Captain Sue Saunders reported that this match against Cambs & Hunts Seniors was rearranged from earlier in the year when rain stopped play. The games were played in good spirit and the individual matches were really enjoyed against good opposition. There is no question that the Norfolk team feel at home at the tree-lined King's Lynn course which was in excellent condition and a real pleasure to play on for our final match of the season. Hospitality provided was first-class and a great two-course meal was enjoyed by all. NVLGS colours were presented to Bev Fowler and rather belatedly to Sally Bettinson, Kath Malvern and Anne Sibley.

Match Captain Sue Saunders reported that this was our third game of the season and, when completing the match sheet, Suffolk Seniors asked if we wanted to play off handicap or scratch as they had brought some new players into this friendly fixture to gain experience. I, possibly foolishly, said scratch. Unusually for a Tuesday this year we had pleasant weather conditions for the four fourballs even though the forecast was predicting rain. These games are always played in a fun and friendly manner, and this was no exception. The course was in good condition with fast greens and it made for some really competitive matches. Hospitality provided by Thetford Golf Club was first-class and an extremely tasty two course meal was enjoyed by all. We had a super day and my thanks go to the team.

104 ladies had perfect conditions for playing golf with afternoon sunshine and a gentle breeze. Once again this event was oversubscribed and apologies to those who did not get in as sadly we could only accommodate 26 teams with a two tee start. Everyone seemed to have a good day out and there was a very pleasant atmosphere in the clubhouse. Prizes were presented up to 5th place, plus some nearest the pins, and this year's first place and winners of the Judith Mackinnon Salver were Jane Wheeler, Sue Hill, Diana Piccolo and Alison Mackway from Dunston Hall. The Society is very grateful to everyone who generously bought raffle tickets which raised £380 for the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital Charity. Big thanks to Thetford Golf Club for their beautifully presented course and delicious lunch and to their ladies section for all their help in making this a huge success.
